Abstract
Correlations of ocular rigidity with other parameters affecting ocular physiology have been thoroughly studied in experimental, post mortem and in vivo studies. Age is a parameter affecting all ocular structures through various pathways, and as a consequence it has direct effects on ocular biomechanics. This effect was measurable in studies evaluating rigidity with differential tonometry since more than a century ago, and has been confirmed more recently in vivo with manometrical studies. Still, there have been some results not agreeing with this hypothesis, even though it is generally accepted and supported in theory. Overall, age is considered to be one of the parameters that affect ocular rigidity. Hence, this effect is independently contributing in the evolution of ocular changes and pathology that develop with increasing age.
