Abstract

In this chapter, we will describe the many and varied types of diabetes that can affect youth. We will also discuss the synthesis of insulin and mechanisms regulating β-cell secretion in non-diabetic individuals, as well as insulin-mediated glucose clearance. The development of hyperglycemia and pathogenesis of ketogenesis in type 1 diabetes will be presented, as well as differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
