Abstract

The major focus of this book relates to management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents. We have also devoted a few chapters to management of type 2 diabetes in adolescents, a condition in pediatrics that is relatively new and extremely difficult to treat. I have also devoted a good deal of this Introduction to illustrate how far we have come in managing youth with type 1 diabetes over the past 45 years (i.e., when I started my training in pediatric diabetes at Yale). Unfortunately, there is still ways to go to achieve optimal management of diabetes in children and adolescents.
