Abstract

Fungal entomopathogens have a long history in both research and application during last three decades in Iran. The present chapter overviews the fundamental and applied aspects of entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) in the country. It briefly describes the history of researches and some case studies in developing of EPFs and also describes how this approach gained momentum to become a mainstream research, extension and plant protection strategy in the country within a few decades. Since the 1990s, a few types of research projects have been started on these fungi to isolate native strains, screen the strains, laboratory and field assay on different insect pests as well mass production and development of suitable formulations. Here, we present an introduction on preliminary works on main characters of fungal entomopathogen then, key crops including wheat, rice, fruit trees, cotton, beet and date palm and potential use of fungi as biocontrol agent on their pests are presented. Finally, we addressed challenge and chance for development of entomopathogenic fungi within pest control program and recommended a future research and application line of EPFs, including endophytic role of EPFs, either as protecting the plant or promoting the growth parameters of the plant, especially for improving the vigor in recent extreme environmental conditions resulted from water crisis and climate change.
