Abstract

The book is structured along country chapters, with each chapter addressing a specific research question linked to those issues that are most important in that country and providing detailed and rich contextual evidence on national situations. The chapters are grouped in three parts. Each part addresses one of three key aspects relating to youth and politics in times of increasing inequalities: the first part deals with socialization processes underlying youth’s political engagement; the second examines different modes of participation by young people, across the institutional versus noninstitutional and the offline versus online divides; and the third focuses on perhaps the two main issues addressed by recent youth mobilizations, namely democracy and the environment. In this introductory chapter, we present the key themes addressed in the volume. In addition, after a brief presentation of the data, we provide a comparative overview of key indicators of youth’s political engagement and political participation in the current context across nine European countries for different modes of engagement.
