Abstract

The definition of “addiction” is not restricted to dependency on psychotropic substances, which act on the Central Nervous System (CNS), modify the functioning of the organism, and cause psycho-behavioral changes. It is a complex and dynamic concept that comprises other behavioral excesses, including involvement in activities, habits, and objects in frequency, intensity, and in contexts that cause social and health damage. According to research on psychobiological aspects of these behaviors, new forms of addictions are associated with structural and functional impairments in brain regions linked to the processing of emotions and rewards, cognitive control and inhibition of behavior, socio-emotional damages, clinical and psychiatric comorbidities, and clinically significant suffering. The objective of this chapter is to describe the clinical, neuropsychological, and behavioral aspects and indications for the treatment of chemical and behavioral addictions.
