Abstract
What are the objectives of this research? How were bicycle commuters identified and approached? What are their characteristics? This chapter describes the approach adopted in this research. First, we specify the objectives of the study. Next, we explain the bike to work scheme as well as the methods used to analyse the different dimensions of utility cycling. Finally, we discuss the profile of a sample of commuter cyclists, in terms of gender, age and socio-economic status.

Notes
- 1.
- 2.
The amount is 100 Euros for companies with fewer than ten people. It then increases non-proportionally according to the number of employees.
- 3.
According to the Structural Survey, the shares of men and women commuting by bike in Switzerland are actually similar and both account for 7% [3].
- 4.
In general, we identify an over-representation of participants in urban and German-speaking cantons. The spatial distribution of participants in the bike to work scheme is broken down in Sect. 10.1.
