Abstract
A key theme both in terms of prevalence and relatedness to the main research question was the role of support. All participants endorsed its importance, describing how various forms made it possible to survive and thrive in STEM academic environments. Conversely, nearly all participants also spoke to the inverse experience of a lack of support, and described how individuals and systems around them lacked (or withheld) guidance and resources, which made their academic journeys more treacherous and circuitous.
