Abstract
The geriatric population who need emergent surgery constitute a great challenge for the surgeon; proper stratification is needed in order to improve outcomes and for bettering the counseling process.
The intrinsic frailty of the elderly with multiple illnesses adds extra stress to the patients suffering from intra-abdominal sepsis.
Both mortality and morbidity, as well as ICU resources and length of hospital stay, are elevated in elderly patients suffering from acute peritonitis. The ability to return to independent home-life is often threatened by the septic event.
