Abstract

This chapter explores the subset of transitional age youth with mental illness who do not attend a 4-year college. The authors characterize some of the demographic aspects of this group and the challenges they face in managing their psychiatric conditions. In addition, this chapter reviews the research on positive youth development, an approach that may be helpful for psychiatrists working with this population. The authors use clinical vignettes and tools to help the reader better understand this population and how best to engage individuals in ways they can succeed in planning their transition to adulthood.
