Abstract

This chapter introduces the concept of a digital or discrete system. We ease into the discussion of a digital system with some non-engineering examples that everyone can relate to. We will then examine the meaning of a digital system from the engineering perspective while examining specific examples related to electrical engineering. Before describing the process of expressing a system in digital form, we will examine some of the advantages of digital systems over analog systems. We will then examine how sampling and quantization are the defining factors in any digital system and will briefly describe these processes with some examples. We will describe the process of analog to digital conversion and describe how the process of conversion takes place in hardware.
