Abstract

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is associated with a risk of hip arthroplasty in younger populations when collapse occurs. This chapter describes surgical procedures using percutaneous stem cells and results for patients with pre-collapse osteonecrosis. Stem cells can be obtained by means of bone marrow aspiration usually with concentration or expansion. Allogenic stem cells can also be used in some situations. Following decompression of the femoral head, these adult mesenchymal stem cells are injected into the osteonecrotic area.
