Abstract

Several properties of Lie groups depend only on their topology and not on their differentiable manifold structure. Some of these properties, which are also valid for more general topological groups, are studied in this chapter. The aim here is not to present an exhaustive development of the theory of topological groups, but only to establish a language and to prove some results which are useful for the theory of Lie groups.
