New Perspectives in Technology Transfer

Abstract

This chapter examines the impact and role of start-ups on sustainable value creation across global supply chains. Within their highly innovative, disruptive, and often cooperative activities, start-ups can exert a significant influence on the business processes and practices of their supply chain members. Consequently, asymmetric partnerships between start-ups and SMEs are common in industrial practice and can support the overall value creation process in various business contexts. The main objective of this paper is to operationalize the individual role of start-ups in creating sustainability attributes along its given supply chain. Therefore, a theoretical background on the strategic concept of cooperative awareness as well as its practical implications is given. Moreover, to examine how start-ups act as supporters and initiators of sustainability in global value chains, an integrated single case study is conducted. By substantively reviewing and analyzing the case study object in terms of its value chain set-up, operations and interdependencies, it is shown that, depending on supply chain architecture and nature of cooperation partners, start-ups can have a major influence on sustainable supply chains.
