Abstract

Starting from John Dewey’s first-time encounter with Chinese traditional education, this chapter analyzes the social and political background of this visit. One hundred years later, as the third-generation successor of Dewey’s theory, Professor Connelly came to China and felt deeply the great changes in education of contemporary China. With the support of the Sino-Canada Reciprocal Learning Project, he undertook a long-term observation of and reflection on China’s culture, education and schools. Dewey’s encounter with Chinese traditional education 100 years ago set a good example for the exchange of ideas and learning between F. Michael Connelly and Ye Lan, which started a new journey of cross-cultural reciprocal learning between Canada and China in the first two decades of the new century.
