Abstract

Trachyonychia or rough nails with its two forms, the opaque and the shiny subtypes, are either a manifestation of a concomitant dermatologic and systemic diseases or an isolated or idiopathic disorder. Regardless of the cause, trachyonychia is believed to be a result of an inflammatory response disturbing the normal nail matrix keratinization process. Topical treatments for trachyonychia are usually disappointing, and the need for more aggressive or invasive therapies may be guarded because of the spontaneous resolution of this nail dystrophy in many cases, especially in children.
