Stimulant-Induced Sleep Disorder in Children with ADHD

Abstract

Sleep disturbances are common among children with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and are also a common side effect of psychostimulant medications used to treat the condition. The purpose of this chapter is to aid clinicians in the proper assessment and management of stimulant-induced insomnia in children with ADHD. A case vignette of a child who develops insomnia following treatment with a psychostimulant is presented as a basis of discussion. The chapter discusses the link between ADHD and sleep problems and highlights the importance of screening for alternative etiologies and comorbid conditions. A thorough differential diagnosis offered and various therapeutic options for managing stimulant-induced sleep issues are suggested. This chapter also informs readers on the available evidence-based treatment of insomnia in children with ADHD.
