Abstract
Availability of the modern safety systems for railway transport depends on many aspects. The technical solutions used in the designing process have a significant impact on the availability and reliability of the equipment and thus also the availability of the railway system in total. There are many key areas affecting the availability of devices, among others, proper system architecture, power supply, transmission system, software solutions etc. Redundant solutions can be implemented in both the hardware and software/logical layers of the system. The article presents practical solutions used in design of the UniAC2 axle counter system.
