Global Cleft Care in Low-Resource Settings

Abstract

Infants born with a CL, CLP, or CP present with a variety of feeding challenges. Access to specialist knowledge, alternative feeding equipment, and a continuing supportive environment to help parents adapt to their new infant is not always available in many low-resource settings. This often results in a higher incidence of faltering growth. Careful attention to feeding assessment and management in infancy is essential, particularly for infants with a cleft involving the palate. Regular monitoring growth is important to assure adequate nutrition. Primary surgery is usually undertaken within the first postnatal year, and a poor nutritional status might may delay surgical reconstruction and increase complication rates.
