Abstract
Vehicles in the vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) share traffic information by broadcasting basic safety messages (BSMs) which helps improve traffic efficiency and safety. With the increase of traffic density, more BSMs will be broadcasted and collisions will occur frequently. Based on the fact that BSMs broadcasted by nearby vehicles contain similar traffic information, we propose a cluster-based BSMs dissemination scheme in this paper. Nearby vehicles form a cluster with the vehicle that maintains relative stable distance with others being the cluster header. The cluster headers broadcast the BSMs on behalf of the cluster members and intersected members belonging to multiple clusters help relaying BSMs among clusters. Simulation results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively reduce the number of broadcasted BSMs. The transmission collisions are reduced and the successful BSM transmission ratio is significantly improved through our design.
