Notes
- 1.
Choristoma is a form of heterotopia (normal tissue found in abnormal locations) and is not a neoplasm (unlike tumors, the growth of a choristoma is normally regulated). Choristoma differs from hamartoma: while the former consisits of normal tissue growing in an abnormal location (e.g., gastric mucosa located in a Meckel diverticulum of the distal ileum), the latter is a disorganized (but non neoplastic) overgrowth of tissues in their normal location (e.g., Peutz-Jeghers polyps in the intestine).
