Abstract

Bowen Family Systems Theory is an evolutionary-based theory that views both individual and family functioning from a multigenerational perspective. Information about clients and their families is assembled through a Family Diagram, bringing to life the interactional patterns and family “processes” that are passed down through the generations, contributing to the anxious functioning of members in each next generation. Based on eight interlocking concepts, Bowen Theory provides a vantage point from which to view human functioning at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels as the theory’s concepts and theoretical underpinnings apply to all systems ranging from the individual to the whole of society. This all-encompassing theory of human behavior can be effective in helping individuals manage not only minor difficulties such as work-related stressors or relationship disagreements, but also more complex problems that result in compromised functioning, extreme symptomatology, or concerns that might otherwise meet criteria for DSM-5 diagnoses. This chapter explores the case of Juliette, an individual who overused alcohol for many years resulting in the complete physical and emotional cutoff from her beloved child, and how a Bowen Family Systems theoretical approach was used to address the anxious drinking that contributed to Juliette’s depression and deterioration of family relationships.
