Abstract

The history of Ukrainian nephrology started in 1927 when the Ukrainian therapist, one of the founders of the Kyiv therapeutic school, Professor Feofil Yanovskiy wrought out the first textbook used for studying nephrology Diagnostics of Kidney Diseases According to their Pathologies.

Currently, there are 9 adult nephrologists per every million people in Ukraine. The incidence and prevalence of end-stage renal disease (2018) are 48 and 229 per million, respectively; 640 hemodialysis sessions are performed annually on each dialysis machine. Hemodialysis is the main modality of renal replacement therapy in Ukraine (76.8%). The percentage of peritoneal dialysis utilization is relatively high (9.4%), although it may also reflect the underdeveloped kidney transplant program with the lowest yearly rate in Europe. This chapter provides a general overview of nephrology in Ukraine and covers historical aspects, main renal diseases, acute kidney injury, and renal replacement therapy.
