Abstract

Poland is a European Community country with a population of almost 39 million people. The main reasons for chronic kidney disease are diabetes, glomerulopathies, and hypertension. Kidney biopsies with full screening for primary and secondary kidney diseases are offered by academic centers and main hospitals. The Polish Society of Nephrology gathers 1100 nephrologists and supports research within the nephrology field. There are about 21,000 patients on dialysis, among them 1000 on peritoneal dialysis. There are public and non-public dialysis centres, both are fully reimbursed by the National Health Fund, offering dialysis to all patients in need. There is an active kidney transplantation program with about 1000 transplants performed per year. The level of funding is currently a major Polish healthcare challenge, and efforts are being made to introduce a program of an integrated care in nephrology that will bring together all levels of renal care in a single centre with bundle payment covering all renal services.
