Abstract
Intubation and mechanical ventilation are procedures done regularly in the emergency department and ICU. Despite the routine nature of these procedures, care must be taken to make certain post-intubation support is managed with the utmost diligence. Essential components in caring for the intubated patient include providing adequate analgesia and sedation (Wood and Winters. J Em Med 40(4):419–427, 2011). An analgesia-first-based approach, along with use of validated tools to assess pain and sedation, is recommended by The Society of Critical Care Medicine (Barr et al. Crit Care Med 41:263–306, 2013). Ensuring your patient is safe and comfortable after intubation is a vital, and often overlooked, part of the airway process.
