Abstract

There are many occasions during critical care of a patient where intubation is necessary. Once you have decided that a patient will require intubation, the next question then becomes, “How much time do I have?” Do they need to be intubated immediately? Or “do I have a couple hours to observe and attempt other interventions?” We cannot always perfectly time our intubations but we can classify airways into categories of urgency: elective, urgent, emergent, or crash. Understanding the level or urgency allows for better planning leading you to airway success!
