Abstract
Opioid abuse and overdose continue to be a major public health crisis in the United States. As a result, legislation regarding the prescription of controlled substances has grown in complexity and is continually changing. As the surgeon, it is imperative to remain knowledgeable regarding federal and state regulations and how they affect one’s prescribing practices. Being cognizant of the policies that govern the distribution of controlled substances and best practices is a responsibility of the utmost importance. Laws on prescription of pain medication have both state and federal levels and can vary significantly.
