Abstract

Our valuations help to drive our economic decisions and actions. This chapter examines these valuations, both in market settings and within society at large. We consider such topics as hotel pricing differences across country, whether a large oil discovery that will take years to reach market affects the current price of oil, and societal values regarding the treatment of disabled people. The chapter also examines why most modern restaurants require waiters and waitresses to enter orders into a computerized system rather than simply provide a written order to the kitchen. Lastly, we examine potential valuation-based explanations as to why nobody can read the handwriting of doctors (with the possible exception of pharmacists). Each example in the chapter is discussed in terms of what it reveals about the economic values held by individuals and groups.
