Abstract
Once a thorough history has been obtained, the clinician uses the physical examination to narrow the differential diagnosis of the presenting complaint. By consistently utilizing a similar methodical approach with each knee examination, the clinician ensures thoroughness. The examination often begins with inspection for visual clues to the diagnosis. Next, range of motion and strength are evaluated. Determining the presence or absence of intra-articular swelling and palpating various anatomic structures can be beneficial. Special maneuvers can be employed to evaluate ligamentous injuries and meniscal injuries. Finally, examination of the joint above and below, in addition to evaluation of gait and functional movements, can prove beneficial.
