Abstract

Knee pain is a common diagnosis presenting to the outpatient general physician’s office. Obtaining an accurate and thorough history of the pain is of paramount importance. Generating a complete description of the pain is crucial, and details regarding the onset, duration, location, nature, and severity of the pain often provide critical information. Distinguishing the onset into acute or chronic time-frames and assessing the mechanism of injury may assist in narrowing the diagnosis. The presence of associated musculoskeletal or systemic symptoms, as well as a history of prior knee injury or surgery, also yields important clues. Obtaining a family history of a musculoskeletal or autoimmune condition may prove useful. When evaluating athletes, identifying their level of competition and position in sport is often helpful not only in assessing the cause of their pain but also in deciding on treatment options. Taking the time to obtain a thorough history of the knee pain will allow the clinician to focus his or her physical exam and differential diagnosis.
