Abstract
Patellar tendon injury, most commonly patellar tendinopathy, is one of the etiologies of pediatric anterior knee pain. While most always a non-surgical injury, this ailment can cause months of morbidity and loss of sports playing time in athletes. For this reason, proper diagnosis relies on detailed history-taking and a non-presumptive physical examination of the knee, which will result in a management plan for successful healing and rapid return to sport for the pediatric athlete. A comprehensive treatment plan including relative rest, functional bracing, and guided rehabilitation will usually assist in healing and resolution of this injury. Early recognition of this diagnosis can help clinicians avoid unnecessary pain, delays in sports participation, and progression to stalled healing, tendinosis, or tendon tears. Once the patient’s patellar tendon has healed from injury, it is essential to initiate a preventative rehab protocol to help avoid reinjury in the future.
