Abstract

Most of us can name at least one special teacher who had extraordinary influence on our lives. I was privileged with being trained and mentored by several remarkable teachers who provided guideposts for my life in science.

Portions of this chapter appeared in John G. King’s obituary by Rainer Weiss and H. Frederick Dylla, in Physics Today 67, 11, 68 (2014).

A 83, 052101 (2011); this group of physicists at the Italian National Laboratory (INFN) sent me a preprint of their article that used the same method I used for my neutrality measurement. They pointed out I had made some errors in a detailed calculation that affected the results. I do not think they were amused when they found out I had designed and performed this experiment as an unfunded undergraduate student. All of the equipment I used I managed to find in MIT surplus storerooms except for a modest out-of-pocket expenditure of $3.00 at a local electronic supply store. It is unfortunate for current MIT students that neither storerooms with surplus equipment nor local electronics parts stores are still in existence.
