Abstract
Faculty advancement and leadership development plays a significant role in decreasing attrition of talented minorities in academic surgery. It is also imperative to any effort to diversify the physician workforce as faculty role models are necessary for the recruitment and retention of students and trainees from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Formalized advancement and leadership development programs specifically designed to meet the needs of minority faculty are most successful when customized to fit the specific needs of an institution or organization. These efforts should not simply exist, but instead must become an integral part of the organizational culture and structure, championed by the highest levels of leadership. In this chapter, we review barriers to leadership and promotion for minority faculty and discuss programmatic strategies that have been proposed to address equitable career advancement.
