Abstract
Abdominal compartment syndrome and intra-abdominal hypertension are frequently associated with severe intra-abdominal infections.
Repeated intravesical measurements of intra-abdominal pressure should be frequently performed to identify patients at risk for intra-abdominal hypertension.
In addition to decompressive laparotomy, numerous medical and minimally invasive therapies have been proposed or studied that may be beneficial for patients with intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome. Despite lack of strong evidence in international literature, open abdomen may be, in selected patients, an option for the prevention of abdominal compartment syndrome.
