Abstract

Dust is an important ingredient of the interstellar medium. It acts like a coolant of the interstellar gas and it plays a crucial role in the formation of molecules, due to the chemical processes taking place at the surfaces of dust grains. In particular, the H2 molecule is thought to be predominantly formed on dust grains. The existence of interstellar dust particles was first inferred from the wavelength dependent extinction of light from distant stars, which is a combination of scattering and absorption by interstellar dust grains. The wavelength dependence of extinction is still one of the important sources of information on the size distribution and composition of dust grains in the interstellar medium.
