Abstract

1938 was the year of racial laws in Italy, the last shameful act of a dictatorship that shortly thereafter dragged Italy, and the whole of humanity, into the immense tragedy of the Second World War. One afternoon, towards the end of that year, upon entering one of the rooms of the Physics Department in via Panisperna, Franco Rasetti found Enrico Fermi and Mario Salvadori engaged in subdued chatter.
