Abstract

The Internet of Things (IOT) takes sensor technology to the next level by connecting up all the sensors and communicating the data for tracking, analysis and response. From fridges to freight trucks, sensors can track how equipment is running, how it is being operated, what weather and other external factors are affecting its operations.

    Note there is not a commonly agreed definition of IOT or M2M. In this book, the terms are used largely interchangeably, but note IOT is typically a broader category that encompasses Machine to Machine, Machine to Person and Person to Person (which is typically enabled by smart phones). M2M is often used for telemetry, robotics, status tracking, road traffic control, logistic services and telemedicine. Wearables are included in the definition of the IOT.
