Abstract
The concept of mental illness like that of mental health is contested in the ongoing philosophical debate about the mind and mental states and raises questions concerning the interactions between mind and body. Illnesses of the mind affect the entirety of a person—not just his or her biological or psychological side. Understanding mental illness requires paying attention to subjective experiences of sufferers in the context of their life history and their relationships with other people.
