Obesity in Children/Adolescents and Obesity-Related Comorbidities

Obesity and Diabetes

Abstract

Childhood obesity is a growing concern, which may result in major comorbidities, previously felt to be adult-specific diseases. Genetics, environment, and behavior count among the pillars of this condition. Lifestyle modification is paramount, whereas indications for metabolic and bariatric surgery are becoming popular as well for severely affected adolescents. The scarcity of approved drugs progressively leads to off-label adjunct prescriptions in those refractories to diet and exercise. Comorbidities can persist into later life- impacting morbidity and mortality. Besides prevention and treatment of ongoing problems, long-term sequelae should be avoided to allow for a long and healthy adult life.
