Abstract
This chapter serves as the introduction to the Human Factors section of this book and provides a broad overview of human factors as it relates to surgery. The authors define the science of human factors; describe a brief history of its use; and discuss various system factors (e.g., humans, tools/technology, tasks, environments, and organizations) and their role in the efficiency, safety, and well-being of surgeons and surgical patients.
