Abstract
Schistosomiasis is a tropical parasitic disease caused by flatworms of genus Schistomsomes, carried by freshwater snails. It is also known as “snail fever” or “bilharzia.” Infection is contracted via skin contact with contaminated freshwater, and disease results from an inflammatory reaction to worm eggs that are lodged in the intestine or bladder. It affects 200+ million people worldwide, and it is second only to malaria in economic impact in the tropics.
