Abstract
This chapter explores the notion of affordances as dynamic processes which these professionals invoke as they draw on linguistic and cultural resources to mediate understandings and capitalise on perceptions of diversity. Illustrative extracts from their narratives reveal understandings of investment and highlight ways in which they understand their professional expertise and identities as far more than the sum of these resources, as they develop linguistic, cultural and intercultural repertoires which they strategically draw on in interactions. The notion of interculturality in professional life is explored beyond risk and competence alone, as these professionals adeptly position themselves to take up new vantage points and develop alternative vistas for making sense of self beyond the stereotypes to navigate workplace interactions.
