Abstract

In an era of concerted global effort towards environmental well-being, there can be no better starting point than the existence of a sustainable soil protection regime. The importance of soil to all forms of life has come under close global scrutiny in recent years. This chapter critically discusses soil as a foundational natural resource through the lens of law and policy in Zambia. A critical desktop review of soil-relevant law and policy will be employed to identify the sustainable soil protection regime. The chapter will outline provisions in law and policy that can be relied on to enhance sustainable soil management in Zambia. Soil health is a key consideration in enhancing sustainable soil management and is directly connected to land degradation, loss of biological diversity, climate change and many other environmental challenges. In order to enhance the quality of the global environment, it is important to align domestic law with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
