Volume-Outcome Relationship in Oncological Surgery

Abstract

A proper answer to health needs requires policies that take into account their change in time: in this way it will be easier to plan and implement health supply on the territory while guaranteeing quality and security. The logic underpinning networks favors new organizational solutions as well, starting from a limited conversion of hospitals up to the strengthening of reference centers for chronically degenerative and neoplastic diseases. Therefore, the planning of clinical networks becomes crucial. According to the logic of networks and their specific aim of guaranteeing continuity between hospital and community, it is possible to identify organizational solutions that share know-how and facilities for the easy access to quality care for all patients, regardless of their place of residence. In this perspective, the Italian National Agency for Regional Health Services (AGENAS), in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Regions and the Autonomous Provinces, suggests models and provides tools for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of regional cancer networks; the Agency also ensures technical support to the Regions and Autonomous Provinces in establishing both regional cancer networks and clinical pathways in oncology.
