Abstract
Studies of Christian antisemitism and anti-Judaism have often been focused on texts to demonstrate continuity and transformation of anti-Jewish sentiments. This chapter explores the tension between the theological Jew, encountered in the theology and theological texts, and historical Jews, encountered in daily life. These historical encounters challenge common assumptions of distinctions between premodern and modern periods, and between anti-Judaism and antisemitism. Reading the classical texts and laws along with evidence of historical relations between Jews and Christians reveals complex historical reality. On the one hand, premodern Jewish–Christian relations offer a more complex view of premodern anti-Jewish sentiments, on the other, they reveal the continuity of the religious dimension of Christian attitudes toward Jews in the modern period.
