Abstract
This is the first of three case study chapters which explore performance-making and a particular aspect of a care home environment. It considers how arts practices can be inspired by a care home’s aural properties, and how the sounds of a care home may be ‘re-imagined’ or perceived differently through creative practice. It analyses a sound installation that the author created with care home residents, inspired by the aural properties of a care home dining room. Focusing on the relationship between artistic sound practice and the everyday sounds of a care home, it uses the concepts of diegetic and non-diegetic sound, commonly used in film, to explore the interplay between sounds that were brought into the care home and the everyday sounds of the space.
