Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to review the literature on how fathers contribute to their children’s social development during early childhood (birth to 8 years). We first synthesize the empirical literature and provide a critical analysis of the ways father involvement and fathering are conceptualized and measured. We then review the methodological approaches that have been used to study fathers’ contributions to children’s social development to inform best practices and end with future directions for research and policy.
