Abstract

The discussion of open problems begins with probability, a field which owed much of its development to a few simple problems that required wholly new methods. The treatment is fairly elementary, but a bit more dramatic than that given in most probability textbooks. Probability theory differs from most mathematical subdisciplines in that it is impossible to discuss it without occasionally waxing philosophic. The author succumbs to this temptation.
