Abstract
The chapter establishes the theoretical basis and development context for the book. This includes presenting a general overview of the literature on youth and the impact of climate change from the perspective of how economic and other crises impact on youth and the coping mechanisms used to adapt to various crisis contexts. Youth and climate change is identified as an area severely understudied. The chapter identifies the gaps in the literature and justifies the need for the study. It positions the book within the context of human capital theory and highlights the current research findings from the IPCC on climate change and its impact on youth in SIDS. This is explored within the context of human capital theory and climate change adaptation of youth in SIDS and education and skills training for climate change adaption. It assesses a range of existing conceptual frameworks, including the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework, to determine their relevance to the study and justifies the need for the development of a new conceptual framework. The methodologies to operationalise the new conceptual framework on climate change adaptation are presented.
