Abstract
This chapter examines the production of potable water. The water quality parameters and the treatment processes involved in potable water production are presented. The means of removing these parameters, referred to as the removal mechanisms are defined. There is also discussion of the removal mechanism, the type of treatment afforded and the parameters removed. A table presents a summary of this discussion including the presence of removal mechanisms in rainwater harvesting processes designed to produce potable water and those designed to produce water for non potable use. The location and role of these removal mechanisms in a conventional rainwater harvesting system is presented. The main points of rwh treatment being the roof, the filter, the pump and the storage tank.
